Emestrin

Antimicrobial Agent

Emestrin is a mycotoxin derived from E. striata, functioning primarily as an antimicrobial agent. It demonstrates significant activity against various fungi, including C. albicans and C. neoformans, as well as multiple bacteria, such as E. coli and MRSA, with IC50 values ranging from 0.6 to 4.55 μg/mL. Additionally, Emestrin acts as a CCR2 antagonist with an IC50 of 5.4 μM in isolated human monocytes and has been shown to induce apoptosis in HL-60 cells at a concentration of 0.1 μg/mL. In vivo studies indicate that Emestrin can induce tissue necrosis in heart, thymus, and liver at doses between 18 to 30 mg/kg in mice.
