Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid

Metal Chelator

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a metal chelator that forms stable complexes with bivalent and trivalent metal cations, including calcium. This compound exhibits various biological activities, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticoagulant effects, and is effective in reducing metal ion-catalyzed oxidative damage to proteins. EDTA is utilized in research applications related to liver fibrosis, coronary artery disease, and neurological disorders, facilitating the maintenance of a reducing environment during protein purification.
