Petrobactin

Photoreactive Siderophore

Petrobactin is a photoreactive siderophore that plays a crucial role in iron acquisition for various microorganisms. Predominantly produced by the oil-degrading marine bacterium Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus, it can also be synthesized by Bacillus anthracis str. Sterne under iron-deprivation conditions. Upon binding to Fe(III), Petrobactin undergoes a light-mediated decarboxylation reaction, making it valuable for studying iron transport mechanisms and microbial interactions in ecological research.
